Travel In Tenerife South
Travel in the South Tenerife is based on private vehicles and a public transport system provided by buses. Most of the places that you all want to get to are connected by bus routes operated by Titsa, the local bus company. It is only if you want to get more out of the way places the public travel service in Tenerife South becomes more difficult.
The municipal centres such as the towns of Adeje and Arona have a number of bus routes that serve them. The larger resort towns such as Playa de las Americas and los Cristianos are also crisscrossed by buses. So you can get from one urban centre to another fairly easily.
Villages will generally have a bus route passes through them, however you need to pay close attention to the timetable because buses may not be that frequent. Small hamlets and outlying areas are unlikely to be served by any public transport system at all.
For this reason most families in Tenerife have one, two or more cars. Private cars of the primary form of transport in Tenerife which means that at times and in places it can be quite congested. In the summer and winter tourist seasons the number of cars on the road almost doubles as many tourists rent a vehicle. Parking is nearly impossible in these high seasons.
There has been talk of a train service that will link the South of Tenerife to the North. Ironically the project is currently being opposed by the Green party! Which is a great example of weird Tenerife politics! Even so the likelihood of a train is by no means assured and is set for some dim and distant point in the future.
Until then Tenerife South will have to continue to struggle along with its overpopulated roads and restricted bus services.
