Tenerife travel

Travel in Tenerife is basically quite easy because it is a relatively small island. Unlike large cities and countries there are no huge spaghetti junctions to content with if you are driving, nor enlarged train termini to negotiate. People in Tenerife around in their own vehicles, taxis, buses or in the capital Santa Cruz, there is also the option of a tram service.

Tenerife has two airports. In the North Los Rodeos is located in la Laguna, near Santa Cruz. In the South the Reina Sofia airport services the bulk of tourist flights.

Buses in Tenerife are called Guaguas, a word peculiar to the Canary Islands. Public buses are green, unless they have lots of advertising plastered all over them, and the local bus company is called Titsa.  Careful not to get public buses confused with the many hundreds of coaches that shuttle tourists from one place to another.

Bus tickets are not expensive and you can get a ‘bono’, which allows several journeys on one card and works out much cheaper.

The good thing about driving your own vehicle in Tenerife is that it is quite difficult to get lost for very long. Tenerife is basically an island with a great big mountain in the middle of it and if you head for the coast you will have at some point in the coast road. Then all you need to do is turn left or right depending on where your destination is!

Taxis are very common and you can either pick one up at the taxi rank, flag one down or telephone for one. Each municipality has a separate taxi service and rates vary slightly from one area to the next.

If you are going to Santa Cruz, whether by car or by bus, the best way to get around in the city is the tram. The newly built tram service is the pride and joy of the city and it is clean, fast and efficient.

So if you are visiting Tenerife you should have no trouble in travelling around the island. Tenerife travel is simple and not too expensive.
